Lou's funeral was held Aug. 9th at Florida National Cemetery at Bushnell, FL

A West Point Graduate, he served two terms in Vietnam. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He loved his retirement and enjoyed his family. He is so loved and will sorely be missed.

Dear PAHS Friends -

This is the brief write-up of the services held last week for Lou Sullenberger PAHS '54, our buddy from so long ago in Paris. He had quite a life after that, including West Point Class of 1959 and two tours in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot. After retirement, among other things, he told me that he had worked as a Director of Security for the Port of Tampa. Lou was quite a close hold guy and so far, there is no actual biography available - although his classmates will produce something for our effort to do 100% obits in a USMA publication called "Taps".

Not indicated below is the fact that Lou and Judy, who live in Brandon, near Tampa, FL, had assembled their kids and grand kids for a fun weekend outing at the beach. Lou went to the gym for a quick workout and while on the treadmill, suffered a complete heart stoppage. He was in a coma for almost two weeks with Judy constantly by his side, and he passed peacefully.

On a bright sunny afternoon on 8 August 2012, amid the lush greenery and rolling hills that comprise the beautiful Florida National Cemetery, Memorial Services were held for our classmate and friend, Lou Sullenberger. Lou had a fatal heart arrest during a workout at his local YMCA, although he had apparently been a picture of health and fitness.

A respectful group of an estimated 50 people, including eight members of the Class of 1959 assembled for the brief ceremony that Lou had specified to his wife Judy. Also in attendance were Lou and Judy’s three daughters and a number of grandchildren, as well as friends and neighbors.

The Honor Guard performed in an outstanding manner with three volleys, followed by a beautiful rendition of Taps. The flag was then perfectly folded and presented to Judy. Following the Memorial Service a reception was held at a nearby VFW Post, where a sumptuous spread of refreshments had been prepared. During this “Last Farewell” event, the Class of 1959 Flag Case was presented to Judy and then Lou’s classmates enjoyed the chance to talk to his daughters and his grandchildren.
