Lieutenant Junior Grade Robin B. Cassell was a Navy pilot assigned to Attack Squadron 152 onboard the aircraft carrier USS ORISKANY. On July 15, 1967 he launched in his A1H Skyraider aircraft as the flight leader of a section of A1H's on a daytime armed coastal reconnaissance mission over North Vietnam.

During the mission, Cassell's aircraft was seen to be hit by automatic weapons fire during an attack on water craft near Cua Dai, North Vietnam. (This is in the approximate region of the city of Thanh Hoa.) Cassell radioed, "I'm hit" and shortly thereafter his plane crashed into the sea and exploded on impact. No parachute was seen, and search and rescue efforts turned up negative results.

Robin and I were very good friends at PAHS.  We continued in contact when he went to the Naval Academy and I off to West Point the same class.

Such a superb person.  Great athlete.  Very intelligent....  handsome...spiritual.....a wonderful friend to have.

In 1970--- I was on a visit to the Naval Academy while a patient at walter Reed Army hospital.  Had been wounded by a machine gun in Vietnam.  Was shocked and saddened to see his name in a memorial of those KIA fighting in the war. Did not know he had been lost in air combat over North Vietnam flying off a carrier.

This was a very remarkable young man.  Such a loss. He had enormous leadership potential.

Rest in peace.

Barry McCaffrey
