Joseph Kruzel - Class Of 1963

Class of 1963 Dr. Joseph Kruzel, 50, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for European and NATO Affairs, died of injuries suffered in a vehicle accident in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Dr. Kruzel became Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for European and NATO Affairs in 1993. Prior to that he had been actively involved in U.S. defense policy as both an academic and a practitioner. A 1967 U.S. Air Force Academy distinguished graduate, Kruzel received both his M.S. and Ph. D. from Harvard University. He taught at Harvard, Duke and Ohio State University. Dr. Kruzel also directed the Program on International Security and Military Affairs of the Mershon Center at Ohio State. Dr. Kruzel served as an intelligence officer in Vietnam and as a member of theU.S. delegation to the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT), for which hereceived the Distinguished Service Award. Kruzel's other government service includes assignments as assistant to Secretary of Defense Harold Brown and legislative assistant for defense and foreign policy for Senator Edward M.Kennedy. He had also done consulting work for the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, the Department of Defense and the National Security Council. Dr. Kruzel is survived by his wife, Gail Chipman, and two children, Sarah and John.

Jon Ham (1965)

I knew Joe, or "Professor Kruzel" as he was known when I was a grad student at Duke University in the early 1980s. I never had him for a course (he was International Relations, not my field) but knew many who did, and they all respected him greatly. Was saddened to hear of his passing.

Barry McCaffrey (1960)

Was privledged to work with Joe during his very successful period of international leadership in the Department of Defense. 

 

BRILLIANT.  INTEGRITY.  PERSONAL COURAGE.

 

Terrible loss of this dedicated public servant in a tragic accident in Bosnia.  He gave his life in service to America.

 

Rest in peace.
