In Memory

Judy Clowes (Chaffee) - Class Of 1965

Judy Clowes (Chaffee)

Died on October 5, 2016 in Dijon, France after a long battle with lung disease. She was born into her adventurer's life on March 6, 1947 in Tokyo, Japan to Laura and Colonel George Clowes. On January 18, 1969, she married the love of her life, Carl Chaffee, and together they travelled the world while raising their two children, Todd Chaffee and Erin Sandral. Judy was known for her gregarious approach to life, her wonderful recipes, many of which were closely guarded secrets, and for the love, warmth and laughter she brought to all who knew her. She had a passion for adventure, was a beautiful poet, an artist and an accomplished linguist. She built a house in Africa, one of her greatest of many achievements. Judy is survived by her husband, Carl; two children and four grandchildren. Her passing has left a hole in the hearts of many and she will be dearly missed. In true Judy style, and as per her wishes, her family threw a champagne party to celebrate her life at her home in Vassy Sous Pisy, France.

Her husband’s address is:

Carl Chaffee

17, rue du Chateau

Vassy sous Pisy 89420

France

So very saddened to learn this news about Judy.  Such a lovely girl, inside and out.  I am sorry she is gone and wish her family to know she is well-remembered more than 50 years later.  Sincerest condolences.

My heart goes out to her family.  We all cherish our brief moments with Judy.  She brought a vibrance and a beauty to everything she did.  And that's hard to do in high school!  Best wishes to her loved ones, Sharon Sweeney

Thinking of Judy and PAHS and thankful to all the people who did so much work to bring us together for our reunion last year ... people are what matter when all is said and done ...

My condolences to Judy's family.  My sister, Jo, and I had a nice evening out with her in Paris in 2000.  Such great memories of both that trip and our reunion last year.  I like the saying, "Life is uncertain...eat dessert first!"

Stunned....  saddened.

Judy was funny, bright, and one of a kind.  Took her to our '63 Senior Prom.  Great memories of that event, and others.

My condolences to her family.

The following post is submitted, after encouragement from Mike Kanze, who also took Judy to a PAHS Prom.  I managed to find some old emails which contained the following:

Hi Pam,

Did you say in Vegas that Judy Clowes was in Paris  and had enrolled her daughter at PAHS?  Carol has put me in charge of our SEP/OCT 2003 trip to France.  It would be fun to say hi to Judy, after all these years.  I wonder, if she's still upset with me for getting her so tipsy at the 1963 Prom?  Do you have any contact info?

Take Care, Mike

Hi Judy,

I am assuming that you are the former Judy Clowes.  My wife and I plan to visit England in 2004-2005 to see our son, Mike II, who (assuming he does what he says he'll do) will be attending the London Business School.  Will you be in the neighborhood?

Take Care, Mike Moon, PAHS '63

Hi Judy,

I took you to the PAHS Senior Prom in 1963.  I had a great time.  Did you ever recover from your hangover?

Néanmoins, parlez-vous francais?

Dear Mike - what a pleasure to hear from you!

( I don't remember being THAT drunk - but I must've lost my hangover somewhere between then and now!) There I was, with one of those silly bouffant hairs from the 60's - and a dress that must've been less than fascinating enough for a prom in Paris - but I had such a blast.....................Thank YOU for the memories!

Me?  I went to a small college, got married & stayed married! I've been a photographer, a Kenya safari organiser, have lived abroad most of my married life ( Paris, again, Amsterdam & the UK ), have two children 31 & 29, and built a house in Kenya where we spend as much time as possible.  I still speak a modicum of correct French - and get back to Paris several times a year.

Yes, unless I get hit by a train, I'll be in London when you visit - and few things would give me more happiness than to reconnect with my Prom date!  My husband is QUITE used to me doing such things - since I've dragged him to untold Class of '65 reunions in Washington DC & Paris over these years.

Am always available via e-mail ( except for when I'm in the 'bush' out in Kenya where Internet access is difficult ) - but please just let me know your travel schedule and we'll make plans for us all to get together over dinner or drinks ( or both!) and speak of past & present.

London Business School.....WOW.  What a coup.  If he's cool like I remember you being - your son could receive advice and encouragement from us!  Is he as 'less is more' & succinct as I recall you being?

All the best - and look forward to hearing from you.  Have you been in touch with anyone else from Paris?

Best,

Judy

The rendezvous never took place for reasons that escape me, now….  So it goes.

Judy was gifted: She always banished life’s boredom.  Hers was a life well-lived.

Condolences to all of Judy’s family and friends

Thanks to:  Pam Clark Webber Hansen, Karen Jacobsen, Mike Kanze, and Carl Chaffee

Best,  Mike
